Schumann Songs and Chamber Music, Sonimage SON 110001

Paul Driver, Sunday Times 2011

This is a disc of a concert and very satisfying it is. The young ensemble, whose name alludes not only to their base, but to their desire to bridge the gap between chamber music and song, and to their admired composer Frank Bridge, perform superbly. Schumann’s E flat piano quartet, every bit as wonderful as his piano quintet in that key, and rendered with bubbling brilliance, gives place with a certain frisson to piano and baritone sonority for the earlier of the two Liederkreis song cycles, heart- touchingly eloquent. Then the piano trio scoring of the Fantasiestucke sends us off in another direction at the end.
